5.7 magnitude quake shakes islands north of Japan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the largely uninhabited Kuril Islands in the Pacific Ocean on Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicenter of the quake was located 148 miles east of Kurilsk, Kuril Islands, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was recorded at depth of 21 miles (34 km). The islands lie north of Hokkaido, Japan and south of Kamchatka, Russia. Seismic activity in the region is common.

There was no tsunami warning, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
