KINGSTON (Reuters) - Captain Ricky Pointing was 96 not out as he helped steer Australia to 189 for three at tea against West Indies on the opening day of the first test.

Ponting, who scored 140 in his last test appearance versus India, was in full control as the tourists set out their stall on a decent batting track at Sabina Park.

He put on a 137-run partnership with Michael Hussey, who made 56 before he was brilliantly caught by Dwayne Bravo at slip off spinner Amit Jaggernauth.

Left-hander Hussey prodded outside off stump and Bravo, moving away from the ball, switched direction to take a super one-handed reflex catch.

The wicket was Trinidadian Jaggernauth's first in test cricket on his debut and gave the hosts a little bit of hope at the end of a session dominated by solid Australian batting.

Australia were 87 for two at lunch having recovered from losing both openers cheaply to pace bowler Fidel Edwards.

Edwards, getting some movement and bounce out of the track, caused plenty of problems early on with his slingy action.
