Inside Siberia’s prisons

Photographer Ilya Naymushin spent time documenting life inside Siberian prisons, including high-security male prison camp number 17, a facility outside Russia’s Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk for male inmates who are serving a sentence for the first time and have been convicted for serious crimes. The prisoners work in wood and metal processing shops, manufacture furniture, sew clothes and do other kinds of work. Naymushin also documented the end of 32-year-old Boris Kovalyov’s time in high-security male prison camp number 5, for men who have multiple convictions for serious crimes. Kovalyov was sentenced to eight years in a high-security prison camp for drug trafficking, but was released two and a half years early for good behaviour and participation in sports and cultural activities. Kiribati: Gone in 60 years

Photographer David Gray spent time documenting life in the Pacific Island nation of Kiribati, a chain of 33 islands that stand just a few feet above sea level, spread over a huge expanse of otherwise empty ocean. Studies show surrounding sea levels are rising, and Kiribati President Anote Tong has predicted his country will likely become uninhabitable in 30-60 years because of inundation and contamination of its fresh water supplies. Nevertheless, while climate change poses a serious longer-term threat, many people now recognise that breakneck population growth is a more immediate problem, particularly for those crowded onto Kiribati’s main island of South Tarawa. Male grooming in Manila

Photographer Cheryl Ravelo investigated the diverse world of male grooming in Manila. Men’s beauty treatments are popular in the Philippines, part of a thriving market for male cosmetics in the Asia Pacific region. Some Filipino men go to great lengths to preserve their faces, from those who visit clinics to receive skin treatments, to fishermen who wear fabric masks while working to protect their skin from the sun.
